It was all about the east tonight, we travelled east and the food was very much from the east, Japan to be precise. We visited YO! Sushi in Bournemouth, YO! Sushi have been in business for twenty years now and have restaurants located in most large cities across the UK & the world. We were there to sample seven new dishes on their menu and it was a first for us, our first visit to a sushi bar, so we were a little apprehensive as we approached this new (to us) dining experience.
We shouldn’t have been worried, we were soon made to feel at home, everything was explained to us and we had a wonderful evening sampling new flavours, some liked, some not so – here is what we sampled from their new 教育漢字 (menu).
CHICKEN KATSU SANDO
Crispy fried chicken thigh sandwiched in soft white bread, smothered with tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mustard. We both enjoyed this dish, it didn’t look very inspiring but the crispy chicken with the soft white bread was a real treat.
FRUITY BEEF KATSU
Seasoned mince beef in a crispy panko crumb, fried until golden. Then topped off with a generous drizzle of fruity Tonkatsu sauce, served with shredded cabbage. Another collection of new flavours and very enjoyable.
Japan’s answer to sweet and sour! Crispy fried cod bites in a sweet and sour sauce. We enjoyed this dish, but it was a little too sweet for me.
Meltingly tender slices of roast pork belly with egg. The pork was delicious, but a little too salty for Vicky and I wasn’t too sure about the egg.
OSAKA STYLE SQUID
Spicy Pepper Squid topped with bonito flakes, aonori, beni shoga, mayo and tonkatsu. I love squid, but I didn’t enjoy the flavours of this dish. There were just too many flavours and I couldn’t taste the squid.
SEARED BEEF ROLL
Radish, cucumber and quick-pickled onion wrapped in seared beef with shichimi powder. This was our least favourite dish, although I did enjoy the pickles & rice.
TOKYO BANANA CAKE
Banana sponge swirled with fresh cream. A light fluffy sponge and a great way to end the meal.
