On Monday 25th March, The West Bay Hotel in Bridport, launched their new menu and Dorset Foodie Family were invited to review it. I was lucky enough to be the one to go…
To be honest, the outside of The West Bay Hotel looks like your typical ‘local’; very unassuming. However, when you walk through that door, you are greeted like an old friend and boy, is the food worth talking about!
I am an indecisive person when it comes to food as I like almost everything, so I am more than happy to take recommendations from restaurants. Laura, The West Bay Hotel’s General Manager, was able to talk me through the menu in great detail and talk about why she liked each dish.
My friend and I ordered and whilst we waited, we were brought some delicious fresh bread with oil and balsamic vinegar.
To start, I chose: Chicken and Ham Hock Terrine – Tarragon mayonnaise, pickled wild mushrooms, honey mustard dressing, sourdough toast. It was beautifully presented and thoroughly enjoyed.
My friend ordered: West Bay Squid – Paprika spiced squid, garlic mayonnaise, coriander and grilled lemon. I had a taste of this too (it would be rude not to). I’m not usually a squid fan but this was so tasty with an amazing flavour!
Other starter options included Devilled Whitebait, Cornish Steamed Mussels, Portland Potted Crab, Roast Butternut Squash Risotto and Globe Artichoke and Leek Tart.
For main I selected: Herb Crusted Hake Fillet – Parley root puree, hasselback potatoes, pickled parsley root, wilted spinach, salsa verde. The combination of flavours was incredible and again, the food was presented beautifully.
My friend ordered: Cornish Sole – Whole baked lemon sole, herb new potato cake, lemon beurre blanc, samphire, roasted cherry tomatoes. The lemon sole was ‘melt in the mouth’ and so plentiful.
The mains menu also included Pan Seared Red Mullet, Pork Belly, Pan Seared Skate Wing, Fish Stew as well as some more commonly found meals such as Fish and Chips and Gourmet Burger and some vegetarian and vegan options.
For dessert, I chose: Milk Chocolate Parfait – Homemade honeycomb, dark chocolate mousse, raspberry reduction. This was a perfect combination for me and everything I love.
My friend ordered: Baked Strawberry Cheesecake – With poached strawberries, white chocolate sauce. I must admit that typically, a cheesecake it the last thing I would usually choose from a menu, because it’s about the only thing I can make well at home, however, I could not stop picking from my friend’s plate. I am definitely going back and having this to myself!
I could not fault anything about our meal, it was impeccable, and I highly recommend everyone visit. Likewise, the service was outstanding. Attentive, knowledgeable and staff who care if their guests enjoy their food.
My compliments to the chef. I can’t wait to visit again!
