Langham Wine Estate is one of the leading lights in the evolution of fantastic Dorset fizz and now they have just opened the Vineyard Café, headed up by Chef Andrew James.
The cafe is a natural progression for Andrew’s business, which has been catering for all the social & private events held at Langhams. Andrew’s ethos is simple, he uses where possible, hand picked local produce that matches Langham’s fine selection of award winning sparkling wines. We visited to try some of his food and of course a glass of Langham’s best…
The menu is full of ingredients that you associate with sparkling wines, hams, smoked fish, pates, local cheeses. You can have a large plate of food, down to a sandwich. You can even go for a Gamekeepers breakfast or an afternoon tea with a glass of fizz. There is also a mouth watering selection of desserts and cakes, all freshly made at the cafe. For drivers and those not partial to a glass of fizz, there are teas, coffees, Cerne Abbas ale, their own apple juice and other soft drinks.
Vicky decided on the savoury mushroom quiche and a slice of traditional bacon quiche, served with salad and new potatoes. Both quiches had buttery crumbly pastry, no soggy bottoms here. The mushroom quiche was our favourite, crammed full of mushrooms, with lots of creamy cheddar cheese. The salad was fresh & crisp, with a delicious dressing. Together with a side of crunchy homemade coleslaw and Andrew’s fantastic bread, which comes in wholemeal or soft white. He is also experimenting to see if he can make bread using sparkling wine..
I went for the smoked fish platter, succulent smoked salmon (perfect with the fizz), hot smoked mackerel and hot smoked Arctic Char from Houghton Springs. The Artic Char is a very meaty fish, white fleshed and has a clean, mild flavour.
For desserts, Vicky went for the chocolate brownie with clotted cream Purbeck ice-cream and some of the largest, most gorgeous cherries we had ever seen. The brownie wasn’t bad either, soft, moist and full of chocolate.
My Dorset Apple Cake, with clotted cream, was I think the best Dorset Apple cake I have tasted. The sponge was so light, but with still plenty of apples and lots of cinnamon.
We were very looked after by Andrew & Paul (behind the bar) and if you are looking for a spot of food & drink, made from hand picked local produce and some of the best wine in Dorset, then this is the place for you… It’s also not as expensive as you may think..!
