Is there anything better on a grey January Sunday than finding that good British pub with open log fire? The White Lion Inn in Bourton, tucked away from the main road offers just that in the furthest northern corner of Dorset. Stepping inside the pub there’s the open fire almost by the bar and then further seating on the other side. We had booked our table as we knew the pub is quite popular. We were shown to our table and had drinks brought to us.

As most pubs The White Lion Inn offer a selection of roasts on Sundays. There were few other options available but we chose the mixed roast lunches.

I enjoy good roast dinners, my husband is not overly keen on them but even he said about his mixed roast that it was absolutely spot on. There’s a lot of food on the plate already and then the vegetables are brought to the table separately. I know pictures of roasts never look that great but the meat (both) was cooked perfectly, vegetable were great and there was even cauliflower cheese.

It is surprising any of us wanted desserts after those big lovely roasts we had but we had a look at the dessert menu and ordered three desserts to share between four of us. We chose White Chocolate and Baileys Mousse, Raspberry Brulee and Chocolate Brownie with ice cream. I don’t think I have ever seen such a large portion of brownie served before. It was great to share! All three desserts were delicious.

If you are looking for somewhere friendly and cosy for Sunday lunch then we would recommend The White Lion Inn in Bourton. They were very friendly, children were treated as equal customers and everyone was made very welcome.
