I have heard a lot about The Venner Bar which is in the Bull Hotel, Bridport. It is a cocktail bar where they also have regular tasting experiences, ranging from local drinks to Polish vodka. I was initially invited along to their Halloween tasting on Thursday 29th October with Dorset Food & Drink (contact The Venner Bar for more details), celebrating a host of Dorset beverages. But as I am unable to attend, mixologist Lloyd Brown invited me along to the Polish vodka tasting experience.
As it is advertised, entrance to the bar is through a secret door at the end of a ballroom, reminiscent of the entrance to Narnia!! The Venner Bar is opulent with leather chairs & sofas and like Narnia it has ice, lots of ice for their wonderful cocktails!!
We were there to listen to Pleurat Shabani, a Croatian who after the war moved to London and is now making vodka next to the wild woods of Poland!
He spoke passionately about his life and how he chose the area in Poland to distill his vodka, but to hear the full story you will need to contact The Venner bar and book a ticket for Pleurat’s next visit to dorset!
His vodka is called Konik’s Tail, I am not a vodka drinker, but this was a pleasure to drink (even neat) and like a fine malt changes dramatically with the addition of a few drops of water!
If you would like to try some of Pleurat’s vodka, then head to The Venner Bar. It is an excellent place for a pre meal cocktail, also post meal (especially as they are very relaxed re closing times) for a warming brandy or even more cocktails! I could also imagine sitting on a cold winters night warm & snuggly in those leather chairs, playing cards while sipping a vodka martini!!
