On a date with my husband and on the hunt for a restaurant away from the beaten track, I stumbled upon this gem of a place – a newly converted pub by the Hampshire based Upham Group. Head chef Darren Beevers has hand-crafted the menu and brings his own signature dishes from his experience in other michelin starred restaurants.

Greeted at the door by friendly staff and after being shown to our table in a large, airy conservatory complete with a beautiful bespoke tiled floor, our waiter explained that their menu was maybe smaller than we might expect but their passion is to hand make everything, that every dish is cooked from scratch each time it is ordered and that they try to use as much local produce in their dishes as they can.

After perusing their well stocked wine menu I chose a glass of wonderfully dry Picpoul de Pinet and my husband a pint of Stakes ale and we enjoyed the summer evening and our surroundings with some sharing bread and butter (all handmade in the kitchen – including the butter!).

After being enticed by the promise of such care over our food, our main course arrived and did not disappoint. My burger was cooked to perfection and it arrived with a sweet/salty beetroot ketchup, deliciously crunchy fries and a salad. My husband enjoyed a tender, slow cooked lamb shoulder with roasted vegetables.

Dessert were equally enjoyable with a cherry and lavender tiramasu and a pinapple upside down cake laced with rum caramel and coconut sorbet …and yes, they were both as delicious as they sounded!

This restaurant is an oasis away from the main hubbub of Bournemouth and Poole. It is the perfect location for a bite to eat with some The Plantation - dessertgood friends or an intimate meal with your partner. There is a large enclosed garden to enjoy a summer’s evening and I imagine in the winter the restaurant would feel warm and cosy – the perfect accompaniment to the beautiful food.
