Because of the distance, we almost turned down the offer to attend the press launch of ‘The Bar’ in The Kings Arms, but it was Valentine’s weekend, so we booked a room and headed down the A35 to the delightful town of Christchurch.

Having been awarded a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand for two consecutive years, The Kings Arms prides itself on offering great local food at great value. Headed up by Chef Patron Alex Aitken, with a philosophy of fresh, seasonal and local, dine from the popular ’15 Mile Menu’.

When you walk through the pillared doors of the hotel you really don’t expect the contemporary decor and relaxed manner that The Kings offers. ‘The Bar’ is a complete refurbishment of a disused lounge into a funky cocktail bar.

It is the cocktails that are the star of the show and they also have a ’15 mile Cocktails’ where the main ingredient(s) of each cocktail is sourced from the local area. There are cocktails with Black Cow Vodka, English Oak Sparkling wine & Clipper Tea!!

Also in attendance was innovative Rupert Holloway and his very special ‘Conker Spirit’ (gin!). He distills this wonderful gin locally in Southbourne and once he has tackled the HMIC hurdles, he will be in full production!

The making of the cocktails is all part of the show and we weren’t disappointed, we tasted the ‘ONCE UPON A COSMO’ Dorset Black Cow vodka, Triple Sec, fresh homemade citrus sour mixed with cranberry juice. Not only does it look luxurious, it tastes so fresh!

So if you are ever in Christchurch, we recommend a visit to ‘The Bar’ and try one of the ’15 Mile Cocktails’ before enjoying a meal from the ’15 Mile Menu’..
