The Cock and Bottle Inn - Morden

The Cock and Bottle is one of our favourite pubs in Dorset and we’ve visited a number of times and enjoyed consistently excellent meals. There is a wide range of home cooked food available – the kitchen does a terrific line in pastry with different pies and puddings, as well as a selection of fresh fish (the skate wing with caper butter is very good) and local game (venison wellington is a staple on the menu) with traditional pub favourites like scampi and chips also available.

On our latest visit I had a craving for steak and kidney pudding, a speciality at the Cock and Bottle.

The pudding is home made with the suet pastry being exceptionally moreish but not too dense – and filled full with tender beef and tasty kidney. The pudding comes surrounded by a meaty gravy – perfect for dipping chips and vegetables in!

Sarah had saddle of rabbit wrapped in sage and parma ham with potato rosti and a blackberry sauce. The rabbit was wonderfully cooked – moist and succulent with a good flavour from the sage and parma ham with the blackberry sauce providing a lovely sweet tang to the dish.

Service at the Cock and Bottle is always friendly and in the bar area dogs are welcome. The bar itself has a decent range of beer and ale – my First Call on Saturday lunchtime was fresh and well kept. In addition to the bar areas there is a modern dining room so there’s normally tables available but it is worth booking for Sunday lunch time in particular. There’s also a nice beer garden for when the sun is shining!

Wareham Forest is only 5 mins drive away so The Cock and Bottle is a perfect spot for lunch after a long walk. Highly recommended.
