A rather wet and blustery Saturday in late May was cheered up by an impromptu lunch at The Canteen on Kings Road East in Swanage.

The Canteen is a small restaurant with a modern feel and a short, locally sourced menu. It’s always positive when a restaurant has the confidence to do a small number of dishes well and The Canteen certainly does that.

There were 4 main lunches on offer – a tian of poached salmon with toasted focaccia and pickled cucumber, a salad of Rosary goats cheese, roasted tomato and basil dressing, chicken caesar salad and ham, egg and chips. Our party tried the caeser salad and roasted tomato salads. Both were excellent light lunch options – the Caesar salad was bright with a tangy dressing, just enough anchovy in the dressing and a generous piece of chicken that had been roasted to perfection. A side of order of skinny fries were announced as a success by the rest of the table – I was trying to be abstemious!



At lunchtime the dessert menu was even shorter – a chocolate orange pot with shortbread or cheese plate. The chocolate orange pot was a rich, dense dessert that satisfied a chocolate fix. Coffees were excellent with well made espresso and cappuccino.

The main drinks list was appealing although lunchtime was a little early to be on the cocktails. The elderflower and prosecco was the choice for two of us while Sarah and I had a couple of the whites by the glass that were pretty good. It’s a sensible looking winelist and I’d definitely like to try their Negroni!

Having enjoyed a light lunch we’ll definitely head back for dinner and try a cocktail or two…

  1. I am impressed, I think the Canteen is a venue to investigate. Presentation of food is clearly important looking at the scrummy photos!

  2. The Canteen is a great little restaurant for both lunch and dinner. We go to Swanage 4-5 times a year and always aim to eat here for dinner once if not twice. Good ingredients well cooked.
