Like many others I was only made aware that Sushi & More had opened when I drove past the restaurant! They have decided on a soft launch, letting ripples of recommendation to do their work, here is one of those ripples.

A.S.Sushi & More have been doing the food festival circuit for a good few years now, so it was a pleasant surprise to see their new restaurant appear on the streets of Dorchester. Their new restaurant is bright and has a very relaxed feel to it, they also stock plenty of interesting ingredients to make your own sushi & more at home. I did see that they are developing an outside seating area, perfect for a slow summers lunch.

We had booked our table for four and it was great to see that it was already busy when we arrived. They admitted that the number of diners had taken them unaware and service did feel a little stretched, but perfectly adequate. Also when we starting ordering a lot of dishes weren’t available, but they recommended excellent substitutes.

We ordered mixed selections of dishes, Sashimi Tuna, Yaki Udon King Prawn Noodles, Udon Noodle Soup, Tempura Prawns, Tempura Vegetables, Duck Gyoza. They don’t sell alcohol, so we brought along a couple bottles of wine, but you can buy soft drinks & teas there.

The food was super fresh and wonderful flavours of the east, the tempura vegetables were a delight with light batter and perfectly cooked. They had run out of Yaki Udon Noodles, so replaced them with another variety, this didn’t distract from the dish and my king prawns in oyster sauce was delicious.

The Mixed Selection of Fresh Sushi hit the spot and the wasabi hit the back of your nose! The Tuna Sashimi was replaced with salmon, which looked a little chunky to me, but was enjoyed by the others.

For dessert I had wasabi Purbeck ice cream, which was a pleasant confusing mixture of flavours! Others had Dorayaki Pancakes filled with chocolate mousse and Mochi rice cakes.

The food was absolutely delicious, with subtle flavours, although they could do with extra hands at front of house and we never did get our Duck Gyoza! BUT I can strongly recommend Sushi & More for some authentic Japanese cooking in West Dorset.

They also do take-aways…
