Summer Lodge is a five star hotel tucked away in deepest Dorset, it is the ideal place to enjoy total relaxation and to be completely pampered by their excellent service. They have a health spa, heated indoor swimming pool, beautiful landscaped gardens where you can enjoy wonderful afternoon teas and a truly opulent restaurant.
We have been lucky enough to have dined at Summer Lodge several times before, we have always enjoyed the meals and come away with a warm feeling of contentment. So imagine my joy when I was given two vouchers for their Surprise Meal by very good friends (x x x) and just for helping them move house last year!! (Incidentally he helped design & built the water features in Summer Lodge’s garden!) We decided to save these vouchers for a special celebration and you can’t get any better than our 35th wedding anniversary, plus the birth of our first Grandchild!!
The Surprise Meal is just that, every one of the six courses is a surprise created by their experienced Executive Chef Steven Titman.
As you approach Summer Lodge down their drive you start to get a special feeling of luxury, the beautiful gardens and their wonderful topiary in the courtyard, all adds to the occasion. We were warmly welcomed and shown into the lavishly decorated Drawing Room.
Drinks arrived with a selection of olives, nuts & crisps – if you are eating the Surprise Meal or Taster Menu, don’t eat too many, because you will need all the room you have! While nibbling away, the Cellar Master (Eric Zwiebel) helped us choose our wine from their huge wine list. We just told him the wines that we enjoy, then let him decide for us and what a fantastic choice he made for us – a really juicy ripe Chianti with lashings of my favourite grape, elegant Sangiovese!
Then the hors d’oeuvres arrived; a clever twist using quails egg, mackerel ceviche and smoked Dorset Lamb…. These tasted delicious and we were now really excited about our Surprise Menu!
We were taken to our table and we had a wonderful view down the restaurant, but for the first hour we were the only diners, so it was a little strange! But thankfully a few more tables filled as the evening went on.
We sat enjoying every single course and the level of service by their mainly French servers is truly remarkable and they made us feel very special for the evening. We had game, fish (the brill and calamari, with saffron risotto was superb), beef and to end the meal an amazing coconut soufflé, with a passion fruit syrup poured in.. Don’t think we have given the game away with the Surprise Menu, because the Executive Chef Steven Titman does change it regularly!
Summer Lodge is the place to go for a huge drop of luxury and also for their fabulous food.
