A visit to Sienna is always a special treat, this one was for a double birthday celebration and also our first visit since the new owner Chef Marcus Wilcox took the helm!! Marcus previously was head chef at the Rose & Crown near Sherborne and was also a former semi-finalist from TV’s MasterChef! He describes his food as modern British with a twist and hopes to hold onto the Michelin star & three AA rosettes.

The restaurant layout is still basically the same as when Russell & Elena ran the business, to be fair there isn’t a lot else you can do with such a small space (14 covers). The restaurant was full and a few tables had selected Marcus’s taster menu with accompanying wine, so there was plenty of atmosphere as the evening continued!!

As expected there was a great selection of wines and good to see that is still supplied by The Dorset Wine Company, we chose a fruity bottle of Sangiovese. For nibbles we were brought a selection of homemade breads, butter & chicken skin butter, plus whitebait and tartar sauce – an odd mix, but none the less enjoyable.

Starters

Heritage Tomato, Mozzarella, Pinenut – a beautifully dainty dish which also had slices of peach with the tomato, which to our amazement was absolutely delicious!

Pan Fried Pigeon, Beetroot Textures, Pear – a robust flavoured dish with succulent pigeon breasts and a perfect match with the Sangiovese. (I know this, because it said so on the menu!!) (sorry not the best photograph of the dish)

Cured Sea Trout, Avocado, Citrus, Caviar – this was my choice and I’m glad I did! Precisely diced cured sea trout with blood grapefruit over puréed avocado, topped with avocado ice cream and caviar. The cure didn’t overpower the delicate fish and the ice cream was a great contrast. Would have gone well with a glass of champagne!

Mains

Slow Cooked Pork Belly, Apple, Broccoli, Heritage Carrots – A good sized portion of pork with great crackling and the jus was amazing – so full of flavour.

West Country Hake, Mussel, Sweetcorn, Chicken Skin – Hake is now my favourite fish and this was the dish that cemented the deal!!! Silky mussel infused risotto, with sweet mussels and the crunchy chicken skin was a revelation – the fish was perfectly cooked with delicious crispy skin – I enjoyed this dish a lot!!!

Desserts

Flavours of Apricot, Pistachio, Honeycomb – Beautiful dish of fresh apricots, apricot ice cream and pistachio sponge, the colour of which did put one or our diners off, but not enough to leave any on the plate!

Strawberry Parfait, Coconut, Elderflower – WOW an absolutely stunning dish and I enjoyed eating it as much as looking at it! Wonderful texture from the dried coconut and the elderflower jellies were a delight.

A fantastic meal, just a little too salty for some of the diners, but it is great to know that Sienna is still a restaurant to visit for those special occasions, actually any occasion will be fine! I’m also sure the Michelin inspector will enjoy Marcus’s food – a lot!
