A staple of Wareham for many years, the Salt Pig has introduced its first piglet, Salt Pig Too, to Swanage. A former bakery, Salt Pig Too combines a terrific butcher/fishmonger and other deli goods with a café/restaurant slightly hidden away at the back. The site has been refurbished with a modern, rustic feel and feels contemporary with echoes of the past, an original bakers oven in the café being the highlight.
Salt Pig Too is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with quality produce sourced from the Purbecks. We visited at lunchtime where the menu rotates depending on what’s good and in season with a daily changing pie, quiche, roast and casserole joined with sandwiches, salads and burgers. The beef comes from White Park farm and the lamb from Tyneham Valley.
For once it wasn’t me having the burger – and a terrific burger it was too that Sarah enjoyed, albeit quite heavy on the oregano seasoning. With a pillowy brioche bun, the meat was deep and flavoursome and grilled to a nice shade of pink. There are lots of options on the side dishes with all the meals. Sarah’s fondant potato was perfectly cooked alongside a fresh tomato and red onion salad.
I’m always taken by pastry and so sampled the braised beef pie washed down with an Isle of Purbeck Fossil Fuel – a big plus point was the fact that it was a “proper” pie with a full shortcrust pastry casing rather than being a casserole with a lid! The pastry was good and rich with a tender, tasty braised beef and carrot filling. Slightly randomly with a beef pie I chose the potato and spring onion salad and coleslaw – both excellent with firm, fresh potatoes nicely balanced with piquant onions and the crunch of the coleslaw.
The butchers counter has an incredible array of local game, meat and poultry, hung properly and begging to be tried on the BBQ at this time of year. Crabs were plentiful on our visit and the fish counter was being re-filled as we left! In the deli there are some interesting local options too, including smoked fish, poultry and game from The Smoke House at Church Knowle. And you can get Cedar Organic eggs too with the most golden yolks you’ll ever find!
Salt Pig Too is definitely worth a visit, whether you’re looking to cook at home or a meal out.
