A lovely Spring morning saw the Purbeck Producers Market set up as normal on Commercial Road, Swanage (by the Chococo shop and cafe).

Purbeck Producers is a group of local farmers, bakers and other food producers selling direct to consumers at the monthly market (held on the second Saturday of every month) and also at local retailers including the Swanage Budgens and the Langton Matravers Post Office.

Saturday’s stall holders included Kathy Best who farms lambs at Church Knowle. It’s lambing season at the moment so Kathy had been up late the night before and still managed to bring a great selection of lamb cuts and encouraged me to visit the new flock opposite the Church in Church Knowle which I’ll certainly be doing in the next couple of weeks.

Phil Samways who also farms locally brought his terrific pork products and I couldn’t resist picking up some of his Sammy’s Sizzlers for a sausage sandwich on Sunday morning. We often see Phil out and about in his tractor, looking after his livestock that enjoy some great farmland in Purbeck.

Maggie Sutton from Farm Cottage Kitchen had some lovely looking venison pies and amazing cakes – I settled for a sausage roll with v buttery puff pastry and herby sausage meat. A cheeky mid morning treat to help get through to lunchtime!

Maggie was set up alongside Reggie Wright. Reggie looks after Godlingston Manor Kitchen Garden. For Saturday Reggie had fresh hen and goose eggs. Later in the year Reggie will have seasonal fruit, vegetables, salad and herbs.

Finally, Corfe Bakery had a selection of freshly baked breads and scones – a lovely farmhouse loaf the perfect accompaniment to my Sammy’s Sizzlers on Sunday morning!

If you’re in the area do look out for the monthly market and if you see any of these products in local shops and retailers they’re definitely worth a try.

  1. I love this review and would thoroughly endorse Jon’s views. As a local resident I have enjoyed pork cuts, pies, cakes and venison from this great local market – the market is compact but good things come in small packages. At Christmas I even bought great fudge that made fantastic stocking presents.

  2. The quality of the food is only exceeded by the friendliness of the service.
