Having ventured further afield for last week’s post I thought it would be great to showcase some Purbeck producers and retailers this time.

In and around Purbeck we’re blessed with some outstanding produce and some passionate retailers – last weekend Sarah and I visited a few and I thought I’d share some of them with you.

The Purbeck Deli is becoming a Swanage institution and has an excellent selection of products including a fantastic cheese counter and home cooked pasties, pies and cold meats. I’m particularly fond of The Purbeck Deli as we got our lunches for days at the beach from the deli nearly 40 years ago!

This weekend we had a mighty fine pork pie – delicious crust and pastry with a slightly peppery pork filling, all nicely balanced and succulent. We also treated ourselves to some marinated artichoke hearts that went very nicely with the pork pie for lunch. Writing that has made me want to go back for seconds!

Budgens, 36 Station Road, Swanage
Although a national chain, the great thing about Budgens is the flexibility they give their local managers to buy from local producers. In the Swanage branch, there is a terrific selection of local produce from Purbeck with suppliers including meat from Wilkswood Farm Shop, seafood from Samways and dairy products from Craig’s Farm.

This weekend we had some delicious smoked duck from The Smoke House at Church Knowle and a flavoursome Tomato, Olive and Rosemary bread from Leakers Bakery in Bridport.
Sarah also put the fantastic Cedar Organic eggs (Wareham) and Wilkswood farm butter to great use in a Chocolate, Guiness and Ginger cake.

If you’re in Swanage then have a look at the local producer section – definitely one to have a browse in.

As you can see from the photo, Holme Farm Shop has a lovely selection of fruit and vegetables (I thoroughly recommend the Isle of Wight tomatoes) as well as dried goods, chutneys, jams and fresh meat and deli products inside as well. It’s a lovely garden centre with a nice café also so on a weekend if you’re a keen gardener like us its definitely worth a visit. We’re regulars at Holme Farm and you can see some of their garden produce coming along nicely on in our vegetable patch!
