Monthly Tasting Societies – How could we refuse when Jamie Barrow (assistant manager) sent us an invitation to this months tasting at Cafe Paninis, Brewery Square Dorchester – great wine & great food is always a wining combination for us!!
Palmers Bridport is a family owned and independent business since 1794, so they know a bit about wine. Tonights spotlight was the Alsace and Beaujolais regions of France, presented by Simon Hore from Thurman Hunt, wine merchants.
On arrival we were given a vibrant fresh white wine from Sicily, Cantini Paolina Grecanico, 2014 – there was also a good selection of canapés, both were thoroughly enjoyed as everyone arrived and settled in.
Simon then guided us through the turbulent history of the Alsace and the strong influences from Germany on the local wines. The wines were crisp and sharp, great for spicy/oriental dishes. We ended the tour of Alsace with a very fine Riesling.
We were then transported to the rolling hills of Beaujolais and their light fruity red wines.
It was then the turn of Cafe Paninis to provide us with a great three course meal, which we all enjoyed and was washed down with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon!! In total we sampled 10 very different wines. Simon’s knowledge of wine and the areas it is grown was impressive. We were also well looked after by Jamie & the staff at Cafe Paninis and it was a great way to spend a cold February evening.
Palmers Wine Store run these wine tastings monthly and alternate between Bridport & Dorchester – for the next tasting head to their website and book now, you won’t be disappointed!
