I recently received a press release about a national competition run by the Seed Fund for fledgling food and drink businesses across the UK. Two of the last 24 are from West Dorset and one just over the hill from me. This is Oompf Energy bars & balls, individually handcrafted by Alyce Rockliff, owner and creator of Oompf since July 2016. So I arranged a date & time to pop over and have a chat with Alyce about her new venture.

On the slow road to recovery from an eating disorder, Alyce was fixated on eating a wholesome healthy diet and she craved something ‘Alyce friendly’ to help sustain her during her triathlons. Oh yes she comes from a very sporty family, her Father is a runner and her husband is a very keen cyclist. To avoid eating the currently available energy bars, that are stuffed full of caffeine & sugars. Alyce decided to create her own range that would provide 100% natural energy.

Her love of baking kicked in and after extensive trails of different flavours and weekly sampling by family & friends, she ended up with seven flavours – Awesome Acai, Oh So Pistachio, Cacao Charge, Very Berry, Goji Go Go, Orange Oompf and Pecan Pow. Which are all free from gluten, wheat, dairy, lactose and refined sugars.

They are individually cold pressed to better retain nutrients and flavour, as well as aiding digestion whilst on the move. Alyce makes a fresh batch each day and they will be in the post to you on the same day. You can also purchase from currently the only local outlet at the Sandsfoot Cafe, were you can also enjoy a coffee and amazing views.

I was lucky enough to sample four of the balls, you can taste all the individual flavours that make up each one & were delicious, but it is the texture that I was impressed with – firm enough to survive in a running bag, yet soft enough to be proper scrumptious.

They have been designed and developed for the super active, but are equally at home in a walkers backpack and from now a fisherman’s bag – so give them a go, you never know this time next year you may even be entering a triathlon!

Good luck next week Alyce with the Seed Fund competition final, the others are going to have to be good to beat you…

PS> if like me you are wondering why balls, well they made mouthful size, so easier to eat on the hoof.
