If like me you find non food shopping a chore and need a Billy Bonus at the end to ease the pain a little, then look no further! A classic “big town pub situated on a junction” the Mountbatten Arms, Poole has been transformed into a stylish, yet informal premium steak house Miller & Carter specialising in steaks – a true Billy Bonus!

So after a long days shopping we swung into the car park at 17:00, perfect for the start of dinner. If you prefer a lunchtime steak they do start serving at 12:00 until 16:30.

We were very warmly greeted by Sandy and shown to our table, the interior was bright with a contemporary classic twist. There were already a good few diners in and the menu is as expected, dominated with every cut of steak you can imagine. Sandy was brilliant and told us that each steak can be traced back to an individual cow from a single West Country Farm, Ashdale Farm.

We decided not to have a starter from the good selection and just concentrate on the steak. With guidance from Sandy we both chose the 12oz ribeye without any of the steak sauces. We did however have to choose our salad dressing for the iceberg lettuce wedge? Which was actually a brilliant idea, the iceberg lettuce was served first as a palette cleanser and did exactly that.

The steak arrived and now we were glad we skipped starters! WOW and an instant mouth waterer – served very simply without the usual suspects mushrooms and onions rings. Just a wonderful onion roast, good bowl of chips (sorry fries) and parsley butter. You can of course order a host of different sauces and sides (half a lobster tail £5), but I can assure you they are not needed, just let the steak do the talking!

Using a proper steak knife we cut in and tasted the steak, succulent, tender and a real good BBQ twang to it. We both had them cooked medium rare and were a little rarer than we would normally have them, but chef knew best and had them cooked prefect for the cut!

After a meal like that you need a good rest before you can even think about a dessert and even with the restaurant filling up, there was no rush to get us out, just a nice relaxed atmosphere. We soon found out why they gave you plenty of time between courses, because when the Eton Mess arrived it was the largest Eton Mess – EVER!

I know the Miller & Carter is not strictly in West Dorset, but good watering holes a little further a field are always very useful to know and I can’t wait to go shopping again!!!
