Like most of you, I thought it must be frightfully expensive having a private chef cook in your home. But we would be wrong, it is actually great value for money.
La Belle Assiette are experts at supplying top quality chefs and have a huge list of chefs right across Europe. Chefs will come to into your home, supply all of the ingredients, cook, serve and clear up. There are three levels of menus, price per head – The Temptation £39 – perfect for any occasion, Prestige £59 – gourmet experience and Signature £89+ – Michelin quality. You just need to add friends & booze..
Our chef for the night was Christian Ørner, who specialises in French and Modern European cuisines with bits of Scandinavian as well. He is also a chocolatier, so dessert was an easy choice..
Arranging the night couldn’t have been easier. After the initial correspondence with La Belle Assiette, you are then in direct contact with your chosen chef. He will telephone to discuss your kitchen and equipment, any allergies and which menu you would like – meat, fish or vegetarian. Your chef then creates and emails you a first draft of the menu, which can then be modified.
As the day approached Christian kept us informed of any tweaks that he had made to the menu. On the day he was in contact again to reassure us that everything was ready, which was really comforting, because we had four friends coming round for dinner and all I had prepared was a bowl of olives!
Christian arrived bang on time and was soon prepping away in our kitchen. Christian even served the fizz when our friends arrived and talked us through how the evening would flow. We were then able to chat to our friends, while he cracked on with the first course. Plus, one of the best things about the whole evening, Christian washed up as he went along, brilliant.
Our starter of scallops and creamed leaks was stunning. Christian had cooked the scallops perfectly, with superb caramelisation. Washed down with some nicely chilled Furleigh Bacchus Dry.
Our second course was Baked Bream, Petit Ratatouille and Basil Oil. Beautifully seasoned fish, with a rich tomato sauce and soft diced vegetables. This was served with a glass of Furleigh Bacchus Fume.
Our main was Butter Roasted Monkfish Tail, Oxtail and Oyster Ragu, Baby Leeks, Red Wine Jus. The beef & oysters were rich & hearty, with incredible flavour and melt in your mouth tender. For this it had to be Furleigh Tyrannosaurus Red, yes we were having a proper Dorset dinner tonight..
Dessert was a silky blackberry sorbet, a smooth chocolate mousse, with fresh pear purée and white chocolate crumble – delicious.
Christian then served us his signature hand crafted chocolates, with beautifully tempered dark chocolate..
Yes Christian certainly knows how cook great food, but equally important he was very friendly, confident, informative and a pleasure to have in our house.
Everyone agreed that the idea of hiring a private chef is not just for the rich & famous, but is a realistic option when deciding where to eat for that special occasion. The price of £39 per head for five courses, is not exorbitant if you compare it with restaurant prices. You get to choose your own menu, provide your own booze, eat in the comfort of your own home and all the washing up is done by the chef…
After saying goodbye to Christian, we finished the night with some Dorset Knobs, homemade piccalilli, a nice slab of Dorset Blue Vinny, a strong crumbly cheddar also from Dorset Blue Vinny. Plus a Frances and a Burwood Bole from James’s.
