Seeing as the rest of the family were away this weekend, my Granny and I decided to go for a late lunch at Mark Hix’s restaurant in Lyme Regis. It was a beautiful, crisp Sunday and we couldn’t have picked a better time as the sun was just starting to set, giving us an even more spectacular backdrop.
We were given a little table for two by the window, slightly away from everyone else – perfect for us to enjoy the stunning views while sipping at some local Furleigh estate wine.
For starter, I had steamed Lyme bay prawns with a herb mayonnaise. Very simple, but completely delicious. As the prawns were quite small, de-shelling them was a bit of an effort, but I quite enjoyed this.
My Granny had the Hix cure gravlax with soda bread. The colour of this salmon was so vibrant and the thick slices were perfect on top of the bread with a squeeze of lemon. She even pinched a bit of my herb mayonnaise which was also a great combination!
For main course I chose the Whole Newlyn Hakes head, roasted with Poole cockles and sea vegetables in a Tonnix white port sauce. I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I ordered the dish, but I was so excited when I saw a huge silver platter of fish being brought to our table. The Hake was whole so it did require some attention, however the waiter kindly gave me some advice on how to tackle it and made sure I found all the best bits. The white port sauce was a brilliant pairing with the fish, giving a slightly sweet flavour.
My granny had the fillet of Lyme bay cod with Lyme bay prawns and seashore vegetables. Like my Hake, the fish was cooked beautifully and fell into beautiful flakes when you cut through.
After consuming copious amounts of Hake, I couldn’t quite manage a pudding, however there is always space for coffee and a Cider Brandy Truffle; or a few!
