Pennsylvania Castle was built in 1797 and has been through many guises through it’s history, starting life as a home for John Penn Governor of Portland, then in the 1950’s into a hotel. Since then it was a private home and now as a holiday home, also catering for weddings, private and corporate functions and other events. Part of the estate is the next door caravan park and this is where you will find the new Hayloft Cafe.

The Hayloft has the same gothic look as the Castle, but inside it is bright and modern, with plenty of seating outside. You can if you wish have your food wrapped as a picnic and you can then walk 20 yards to their cliff top area to enjoy the views. The menu is written on the wall only, which will make it difficult for a family sitting outside to choose, but they will be delighted by the amount of choice!

You can choose from fresh cakes (Jessica’s Cakes & Rolly’s Brownies) , baguettes, toasted paninis, daily specials and pizzas. They even have a kitchen garden right next door, ensuring their salads etc. are super fresh, mine had fresh garden peas scattered amongst it – delicious.

I choose ‘The Forager’ roasted garden vegetables with goats cheese and pesto, which was full of veg and plenty of melting goats cheese, perfect for a lunch. They are also licensed, so chance to have a beer after a long walk around the coast of Portland.

The Hayloft is also available to hire for your own party or have them deliver food to your party at home! Give it a go you won’t be disappointed…..
