A 60th birthday & retirement required suitable celebrations and a big party was planned for the Saturday. But my birthday was actually on the Thursday, so to make that day ‘special’ we headed over to the Half Moon for a lunchtime meal!!
Since March 2015 the Half Moon has award winning Karl & Zuzana Bashford at the helm, their previous pub was the highly successful Three Horseshoes Inn in Powerstock. The Half Moon is a grade II 17th century thatched village pub situated half way between Bridport & Beaminster. They pride themselves on preparing the best of the local produce they can find, so an ideal venue for my birthday meal.
Susie warmly greeted us and showed us our table, the menu was nice and short with plenty of fresh fish from West Bay on show, plus local meats & even Dorset Snails! If you don’t want a full meal, there are baguettes and also a good children’s menu.
With scallops, crab, lobster & ribeye steaks on the menu, we didn’t take long to choose!!!
The scallops, braised lettuce, peas, girolles and bacon, was a delight. The summer fresh vegetables coated in a light sauce, with the salty bacon and meaty girolles was perfect, it actually went very well with a pint of Palmers Best!!
The West Bay crab on toast with rapeseed oil mayonnaise was also delicious, the light mayonnaise let the delicate flavour of the fresh crab to come through. This went even better with a glass of Prosecco!
For my main meal I stuck with seafood and had the half West Bay lobster, garlic & hazelnut butter, baby leaf salad & chips. The chips, perfect three fried chips cooked in dripping, the Half Moon is worth a visit for these alone!! The lobster was nicely presented and no need for cracking claws, but plenty of sucking on the legs!! The garlic & hazelnut butter, gave texture and garlic with seafood is always a winner with me!
The ribeye steak, Portabella mushroom, roast tomato, pepper sauce, watercress and chips. Great succulent tender steak, with silky pepper sauce, plus those delicious chips!!
I was the only one to order dessert, a classic Creme brûlée with a Camp coffee ice cream, which was fabulous, plus they even put a candle in it for me!! 🙂
We enjoyed our time at The Half Moon and it is well worth a visit for a special occasion or just passing through You will receive a very warm welcome from Rosie and enjoy the wonderful modern pub food prepared by Karl, plus our very own Chef Ali Smith is now the Sous Chef there!
