I’ve only heard people tell me delicious things about the Franco Manca sourdough pizzas and last night I had the chance to chec out the pizzas for myself in the new restaurant in Bournemouth Square.
Nestled into the very centre of Bournemouth, Franco Manca’s bright and open frontage with plenty of outside tables, welcomes you into the the bustle and delicious smells reminiscent of an italian kitchen. Beautiful painted tiles adorn the floors the open kitchen and the huge wood fired oven provide a focal point to the restaurant.
I was attending the launch night, which meant I was able to sample a little bit of what all the restaurant has to offer and I was initially presented with beautiful charcuterie, mozzarella and artichoke hearts accompanied by some handmade pesto and delicious fresh salads. All the charcuterie is sliced on site direct to your plate and even the wild garlic and herbs were foraged locally before being whizzed into the tasty pesto.
After we had all devoured these, we were able to watch the chefs make, and then sample some of their signature sourdough pizzas that I had heard so much about!
All the sourdough bases are made by the chefs onsite each day with dough being left to rise over night ready for the service the next day – perfect long prove to create those wonderfully long, tangy flavours that sourdough breads are so famous for. Chefs then create the pizzas to order before cooking in a matter of moments in the enormous wood fired pizza oven.
Along with the regular menu with some of their signature pizzas, the specials board changes daily so there are always new combinations of toppings to try and plenty of choice for vegetarians.
To finish the evening, we were also treated to some of the puddings with some classic italian espressos and a little lemoncello. Pictured below is an incredibly light (and delightfully boozy) tiramasu, a lemon and almond sponge and a chocolate and hazelnut cake – all an equally delicious way to finish your meal (if you were to have any room left after all the glorious pizzas!).
Franco Manca have chosen a limited but high quality drinks list to make sure that the drinks themselves perfectly accompany their menu and include a range of more sustainable, organic wines, some bottled beers (both lagers and IPAs) as well a small selection of cocktails and a delicious selection of soft drinks.
Franco Manca is a gorgeous little pizzeria that really cares about every detail of the food and drink on their menu. With its lively atmosphere and the drama of the wood fired oven, it is a lovely addition to the bustling Bournemouth foodie scene.
