I met Farmer Colin Hawkins on the banks of the River Frome more than thirty years ago, when I first joined the Dorchester Fishing Club. It seems hard to imagine that since our first meeting, he has planted a vineyard just a stones throw from the river, that now produces some very fine sparkling wine.
The vineyard was established in 2011 on part of the old Poundbury Farm, that his Father & Grandfather used to work. His Grandfather Harry, knew Thomas Hardy, so it naming the wine just had to come from one of Hardy’s famous books.
The varieties of grape used to make D’Uberville are classic Pinot Noir, Pinot Meaner and Chardonnay, with a Bacchus variety planted just this year. It is vinified at Langham Estate, who know a thing or two on producing award winning sparkling wine.
The wine is dry, extra brut is on the label, it is crisp, refreshing, sophisticated, a fun sparkling wine for special & social occasions – you can purchase it for only for £25.99 a bottle from Dorset Wine Company, Poundbury which is only 850m away from the vineyard!
