Well its the end of the Summer Holidays, its time for our yearly ritual to park in West Bay and walk west for a couple of miles along the Coastal Path. We then reward ourselves with a delightful meal at the Downhouse Farm Garden Cafe, which is tucked away in the trees just behind Golden Cap. This is a stunning walk with fantastic views to the south of West Bay, Chesil Beach & Portland and to the west Golden Cap. It is a good two miles walk mostly down hill (well except for the up hill bits) and you really do earn your food. You can of course drive directly to the cafe, but that would be cheating!

This really is a garden cafe and was surprisingly quiet for a Bank Holiday Monday (it is usually closed on a Monday except Bank Holidays), we did notice a table of six retreat because of some pesky wasps, but armed with breakfast menu to repel them, I felt safe & sound! The servers couldn’t have been more friendly & helpful, advising us to change table as the previous occupants had just had cream teas, which is also the wasps favourite meal!

The menu lists snacks, sandwiches and drink, for meals you need to check their specials menu next to the door. This ranges from Lentil Dhal, Bubble & Squeak, Lyme Bay Fish Pie, Mackerel and a Mediterranean Roasted Veg Tart. We chose the veg tart and fish pie, drinks elderflower presse and a ginger beer & apple juice punch (I will be making this), plus two glasses of water to quench our thirst.

The meals didn’t take long to appear and as always they both looked wholesome and generous portions. Vicky’s Veg Tart was really tasty with flavours of sweet red & green peppers bursting through.

My fish pie could have done with a few more seconds under the grill, but it was stuffed with fish and a great creamy sauce, I also enjoyed the chunks of potato rather than it all being mashed. We both had side salads with a really good honey dressing, nothing fancy, but more than adequate.

Downhouse Farm Garden Cafe suppliers list is a who’s who of great local food, they also grow and farm a lot of the vegetables & meat. They have won two Taste of the West Gold awards for the best cafe in Dorset, so it really is well worth a visit to this well hidden gem!

It was now time to head back to West Bay and a reward of an ice cream, luckily the route back is all down hill (well except for the up hill bits)!!
