Ice cream made of buffalo milk? I was certainly intrigued to find out more after West Dorset Foodie had been lucky to try some this summer. So I crossed over to Somerset to visit West Country Water Buffalo farm to learn more about their recently launched Buffalicious range of ice creams.

The farm shop was very easy to find. It is located along the A37, not far from A303 making it an ideal stop for lots of people commuting and also holidaying in the west country. I was taken for tour around the farm, I met the milking herd of water buffaloes and I must say I learned a lot! Water buffalo farms are not very common in England and I certainly had not been to one before. The Corpe family have been farming water buffaloes since the 1990s for meat (which is also sold in the farm shop) and recently started milking few of their water buffaloes. Once the milking was established Buffalious was born. At the moment they produce a range of luxurious ice creams but there are further plans for more dairy products such as yogurts and cheese.

You must be waiting to find out what I thought about the ice creams? First ice cream I tasted was the plain one. Yes, just plain ice cream, not vanilla, nothing added, just plain. I really did not know what to expect –  just one mouthful of the plain Buffalicious ice cream and I was convinced it is quite likely the best ice cream I have ever tasted! Buffalo milk in richer than cow’s milk and also slightly sweeter which gives the ice cream it’s fantastic flavour.

Other flavours followed and now I knew I would be tasting something great each time. Buffalicious currently produce the plain, coffee and vanilla ice creams. Amaretto flavour only made its way to the farm shop this week so I was one one of first people to try it. And it certainly is absolutely amazing ice cream! If Amaretto ice cream can taste that good I cannot wait for Buffalicious to launch their Limoncello ice cream!

Buffalicious ice creams are locally produced in Somerset and currently sold in the farm shop only. But trust me, it’s worth the trip for these ice creams. The flavours are fantastic, this is ice cream like it should be: smooth, sweet and creamy with flavours you can taste. Buffalious ice creams are sold in small individual tubs and also in larger tubs to share. I think the Amaretto ice cream would make a lovely dessert for any dinner party!
