It is great to see that Dorchester seems to be bucking the trend with two independent butchers open in the past year!! The first to open was County Town Butchers in Hardye Arcade, Dorchester, run by Stuart Jury. Stuart strives to source the majority of his meat locally. Venison is also available and other seasonal Game.
The Brace of Butchers opened this weekend and will be serving a range of high quality, locally sourced meat and poultry; as well as providing a cheesemonger, on site prepared pie range and other prepared products served within their delicatessen. The company, founded by the Watercress Company owner and Managing Director Peter Old and Tom Amery, will showcase the finest meats from the most coveted Dorset farmers, providing the last word in provenance and traceability
The first thing you notice as you walk into the Brace of Butchers is the window of their large walk-in cold room. This onsite facilities has been designed so the Brace of Butchers can age its beef in the best possible conditions.
The second thing I noticed was the till, which is a separate entity, allowing the butchers to serve customers without handling money – just like the old times!
They also have a great selection of local cheeses and cured meats, along with local chutneys & produce – plus watercress & salads leaves of course!
But it is the meat that is the star of the show and it all looked stunning, all prepared & served by the brace of cheery local butchers (Rob Owen and Ben Black), both perfectly dressed for the job.
It was difficult to decide what to try first – nice piece of belly pork, chuck steak or free range chicken. We hit on the best of both worlds, we bought smoked streaky bacon and a free range chicken to be cooked in the wood fired oven.
The Brace of Butchers is brilliant, it looks good, it has fantastic produce and fantastic staff – makes you wonder why more shops don’t follow this simple business plan!! I can’t wait to explore their various flavoured sausages – Pork & Watercress I wonder where they got that idea from!! 😉
They will be open 7 days a week – 10:00 to 13:00 on Sunday’s
