The BearKat Supper Club is the idea of Chef Dom Brown (Head Chef at the Soulshine Cafe, Bridport) to create secret dining experiences in the Dorset area. The date was set and tickets went on sale, but the menu, entertainment and even the location is kept secret until the day of the event!!! At 9am the email came through telling us that tonight’s event was to be held in The Lyric Theatre, Bridport.
The Lyric is a story by itself, saved from the developers by the wonderful Niki McCretton and through Crowd Funding she is starting to refurbish the theatre back to health! Plus it isn’t every day you get to be served by the owner of a theatre!
We arrived at The Lyric and greeted with glasses of BearKat cocktail (Prosecco with Elderflower and Liberty Fields Apple Aperitif). As theatres go The Lyric is small and perfectly fitted Dom’s decadent ambience, so much so it was impossible to separate what was part of the theatre and what were props for the event!! Tonight’s experience was the first and it has taken many months of planning by Dom & his helpers, so it was good to see over 30 guests turning out on a gorgeous summers evening to sample his great food.
As guests arrived canapés were served while Mr Tom Hughes played a splendid old grand piano. The canapés were delicious and the Parma Ham was my pick of the bunch! The kitchen was like a mini stage and provided great theatre when the door opened allowing us to peer in to see Dom hard at work.
As the food was served the Bug Tree Swamp band started to play their blend of Jurassic Ska, which did make it difficult to hear conversations, but there again we are both deaf as posts!!
Starters: Garden Nectar Soup – fresh peas & broadbeans with shallots, tomato and Pancetta salsa with homemade bread. A bowl of summer delights, which not only looked fantastic but tasted great as well!!
Main: Roast Saddle of Lamb – Dorset organic lamb pan fried or Aubergine Gratin, served with heritage carrots, summer greens & sautéed truffle potatoes. The lamb was a real special treat for me as we don’t eat a lot of red meat, so it was good to have such a high quality joint to enjoy. The summer greens with lashings of garlic along with the sweet carrots and the earthy potatoes, matched the lamb perfectly.
Pudding: Spiced Upside-Down Cake with clotted cream and plum sauce. Which was an ideal end to the meal, a traditional pud that everyone enjoyed.
By now the band were on their break and after a quick chat with Dom we decided to head east. We enjoyed the night and we hope that the BearKat Supper Club will gain momentum and become part of the Bridport social scene… Next BearKat Supper will be the end of August, so keep an eye on their website for details…!
