I had the absolute pleasure recently to have a coffee with Barbara, the owner, cook, recipe maker, grower and all round passionate Dorset Producer behind Barbara’s Kitchen. Obviously we chatted at length about our glorious foodie scene here in Dorset but I did manage to find out a little more about her delicious chilli jams and chutneys and Barbara’s vegetarian street food.
Barbara’s journey began with a glut of chillies grown in her garden, far more than could be eaten by Barbara and her family! Keen not to throw away a delicious and organic product, Barbara made them into jam and chutneys and gave them away to friends and family. After getting such overwhelmingy wonderful feedback, Barbara tip toed into selling them by hand-making them in the traditional style in small batches – and she hasn’t looked back.
Now Barbara’s kitchen has a range of 5 products including 3 types of jam and including the best selling Bloody Mary Jam, a chutney and a relish and all her products are both vegan and gluten free. Barbara and her family have been vegetarians for many years and after failing time and time again at food festivals to find delicious and local vegetarian food options, Barbara decided to try and fill that gap with her own home cooked vegetarian street food. She signed up to the Christchurch Food Festival and quickly sold out of all her products! Since then her street food has gone from strength to strength and this year, Barbara is signed up to a number of East Dorset’s brilliant food festivals including the Bournemouth Vegan Fair and the Christchurch Food Festival. So if you are on the look out for tasty and nutritious vegetarian street food including vegan hot dogs and her award winning vegetarian scotch eggs then do look out for her stand.
It is always a joy to meet local food producers and especially so if they hand craft their products from a place of passion and out of the joy for helping and serving people – and Barbara is no different. Her products are lovingly tried, tested, sourced, cooked and sold, from beginning to end… and you can really taste that in products themselves.
