The Balti House has been serving up great curries in Weymouth since 1994, out lasting and out performing many others in its wake. So when asked, it was a pleasure to help them promote the launch of their Wednesdays “Thali Night” special. A Thali is a round stainless steel plate, with a number of smaller dishes called katoris, each filled with different curries and is the traditional way dinner is served in an Indian household.
We arrived to an already buzzing restaurant, full of curry lovers and plenty enjoying possibly their first Thali. Shalim Abdul, who is the owner of the Balti House, said that the Thalis will consist of authentic Indian regional curries as well as their own house specials. Each week the selection will change and you also have the option of a vegetarian Thali.
After the obligatory popadom with pickles, the Thali’s arrived and looked stunning. Shalim explained the different dishes, we had a Keralan chicken, okra & tamarin, Dhal, Goan chicken, lamb Madras, Pilaw rice and Naan – all for just £13.50.
It was great to have some authentic Indian dishes, which are lighter on the chillies, allowing you to taste the more subtle spices and the main ingredient of meat or vegetables. The Dhal took me back to the searing heat of the jungle along the banks of the River Cauvery (just south of Bangalore). The lamb was tender and the sauce had warmth & depth, as opposed to the chilli heat of a UK Madras. The Goan chicken curry was a mild, sweet and fragrant dish. The Keralan chickens creamy coconut sauce had a little more of a chilli kick. It is always a delight to eat okra, especially these cooked in a dry tamarin sauce – delicious.
If you are fed up with these cold wintery nights, head down to The Balti House on a Wednesday night and soak in some of the Indian warmth. You might see us there, because we are heading back to try one of their vegetarian Thalis…
